Midnight Musings

Hey babes! Welcome to a new series I'm starting on the blog titled "Midnight Musings". I'm one of those overanalyzers who spends valuable sleeping time pondering pieces of my day. What better way to work through them than with you all? I'm thinking this may be a weekly/biweekly post. That just muses on general topics from friends to shopping habits; that we may all have deliberated about--at one time or another. Let me know what y'all think! And if there are any topics you would like to discuss!

We’ve all been there. That moment when you’re at lunch and you feel like you’re eating alone because your friend is constantly staring at their phone. Not to say I’m not guilty of wanting to get the “perfect” Instagram shot of my drink or dessert; but, you can get the “shot”, upload it, tweet it, and be done with it. Technology is taking over our day-to-day interactions, and not in a good way. You see it everywhere. The groups of people sitting at a table “interacting” when their heads are actually buried in their smart phones.

I’m always in a constant struggle over whether to say something or not. I mean, they’re my friends; I want to spend time with them; but, not like that. We live in a world where knowledge is at our fingertips. I’m always questioning how people “truly lived” without all the technology we have. I mean, how did people ever get anywhere without the GPS on the iPhone. Seriously?!

But, in all seriousness, we need to take a few steps away from the constant buzz of technology when we should be building true relationships. I’m tired of being the third wheel to “Guess what Kim Kardashian just tweeted!” I would rather know about the cute guy you just met or the great movie you saw without having to get all of my info in a 160 character blurb.

Not to sound melodramatic. But I’m just asking for people to be present. Some of the things I value most in life are honesty and being real. You can’t really get to the heart of someone if you can never look them in the eye!

I’ve heard about people who put their cell phones in the middle of the table on vibrate when they’re at dinner, etc. And if someone can’t help but reach over and grab theirs--then they have to pay for everyone’s dinner, or a round of drinks, etc. That’s not such a bad idea. May just have to try it next time I’m out!

Have any of y’all dealt with an extreme case of smartphone-itis? What kinds of tricks did you employ? Or did you just lay your cards out on the table and asked for some real-time?

  1. so i'm totally guilty of sticking my nose in my phone and zoning out. it's bad. so my hubby employs a rather effective way to get me to stop. he starts asking me incredibly annoying questions about what i'm doing. i.e. "so, what's new on twitter?" or "what did [insert celeb name here] have for breakfast?" and guess what, it works! because my immediate reaction is "you know, i don't really care what [insert celeb here] had for breakfast, i have like 20 minutes with my hubby and i want to talk to him!". maybe give that a shot when your friends have their noses in their phones to get them to snap back into reality :)

as a "muser" myself, i love the new feature!

  2. This is definitely one of my pet peeves. It makes me feel like I'm not important or not interesting enough when someone can't tear themselves away. Just put the cell phone down, people!

  3. Feel very much the same! Are we as people not enough any more, are our personalities and relationships not enough? I leave my phone in my room sometimes so I won't be tempted. If I'm about ready to eat dinner, I tell who ever I'm texting that I'll get back with them after the meal. It works well!

    1. I do the same. I tend to just leave my phone places when I get home so not to really bother with it!

  8. I get so angry with husband who does this with people we are talking to or in a group of people. He just can't seem to understand how rude it is.
I obviously haven't found a solution for it yet lol

  9. Great blog post!! I hate when I am trying to hang with my friends and they are on the phone the whole time. Not that I can't say I haven't been guilty of it before. I like the idea of putting everyone's phone in the middle of the table at dinner... maybe I will have to try that one next time!

  10. i'm so terrible with my phone. i've been trying to be a lot better though. if i'm out to eat with friends or family i just keep my phone in my purse and don't take it out. it helps to be more "present".

  11. I cannot stand it when I am hanging out or having a meal with someone and all they are doing is checking their phone. I have a buddy who will come over, sit and hang out on my couch, and spend most of the time on his phone - I'm like, why are you even here?! ;o)

    1. Exactly! What's the point in "hanging out" if you're not really "here"! Definitely irks me! lol

  12. I hate when I'm spending time with a person, especially when I haven't seen them in awhile, and they're texting away! So annoying. Anyway, I'm a new follower. Love your blog!

  13. Loving your new series! Sometimes those moments you should be spending sleeping are the best opportunities to ponder those creative juices.
I completely agree though - we need some time away from the gadgets and gizmos to just spend time doing more of what makes us happy :)

  14. I seriously hate that as well or when people are looking at everybody else walking by and you wonder why you're even there if you're obviously invisible. Drives me nuts

  15. interesting post, i actually agree and find it really rude sometimes, like i had a friend tweeting and texting through my entire birthday party last year, but its fun if they include you i guess and do it as a group?

    1. If it's a group thing--like we're being nosy about someone! hahah I'm okay with it. But if I'm trying to have a conversation or want you to join my party it's just super annoying and rude!

  16. Goodness, I actually didn't know things were getting so out of hand. Must be because I still have my old cell phone, with no easy internet access ;)

I think there was actually a Kardashians' episode where they all got mad at Kim for constantly texting and never paying attention of anyone actually present. I thought then that it was some sort of celebrity phenomena LOL

  19. I totally agree about the phone usage issue. With my friends, if someone is on their phone too much I've started speaking up. It's not only annoying, but rude as well. Love the idea of putting your phone in the middle and making whomever reaches for theirs pay... ha

  21. This is a great post! I dumped facebook and never got a twittter account because of this stuff. It drives me crazy when my friends don't listen to me or ask me to text them when they're standing next to me. Hello, really?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Have you ever noticed how anoying it gets when your walking behind someone who's texting? When I'm using my phone while walking I stop and move aside. I have no idea when it became appropriate to bring them on the table tho. When we're drinking coffee or having lunch, sometimes something comes up but at least we share that with one another :)

  25. I'm definitely guilty of being a smartphone addict. But its usually in the comfort of my own home. that way the only person that can get mad at me is the fiance. ha. :)

  29. I absolutely hate this! Recently, I was at dinner with 2 of my girlfriends and they were both just so lost in their phones. Playfully, I made a statement that expressed how I felt about them being on the phone while we were enjoying dinner together and they used it less. It bothers me so much that people can't just enjoy life without constantly staring down. I've had to learn this as well. Furthermore, it's just not polite to be on the phone in the company of others. I wrote an article about this as a guest feature. But yes. It's frustrating to say the least lol

  31. I've definitely been on both sides of this post. Sometimes you don't even realize you're "that person"... or I don't anyway. It's something I'm really trying to work on. Between work and homework, and my blog, I spend way too much time in front of a screen as it is. I don't need to stare at my phone the rest of the time!

  32. I'm definitely an over analyzer, and this cell phone thing drives me nuts! I've noticed people do that a lot during lunch at work! My friends aren't really too bad, but my boyfriend and his eBay addiction can cause him to be bad about having his cellphone in his hand during dinner. I think we still need to put priority on being in the moment. :)
